How do you design control and monitoring systems for a new kind of fusion plant? You think you could maybe do it via Skype? What if you went out to see the plant a couple of times with a notebook and a digital SLR?
Let's get with the program here folks. Producing complex control and monitoring systems for a new kind of technology that no-one has ever studied before dictates that you have one in your possession. Not only have that but that you know EXACTLY how it works.
So for NI or any other company to achieve this they are going to need one and they are going to have to take it to bits, test it in every conceivable way and understand how it behaves. How can you safely monitor and control something that you don't fully understand?

You don't. Period.
I believe you do not need one to sell meters and monitors... I believe you just need some specs to work from, like on every other project ever brought to production ever... what are you measuring, how much and how often... its not like Rossi will be bending hyperspace, I'm pretty sure "off the shelf" monitoring devices will work.
( And good measurement has always been Rossi's strong suite, so he is sure to concentrate on getting this right isn't he... get real, get Rossi!!)
I thought the story about NI being the silent partner unlikely and dubious at best. It made no sense.
The reason being you don't need to own one to sell the control software.
You just need the input sensor's information like core temperature, hydrogen pressure, water flow rate etc, and the controls you have access to like pump regulator, electrical heating element regulator etc, you will be dealing with via software in real time.
Mr Rossi is then free to program the software to optimize efficiency of the reaction.
